DVD + VCR Combination Unit. The one feature that would be absolutely guaranteed to sell DVD/VCR combination players by the shipload is absent from the Bush DVHS1 - the ability to copy DVDs to tape. Obviously, thats never going to happen - at least not on legitimate products sold in the UK - so for the combi concept to work there has to be another compelling selling point. Well, weve looked and if there is one its not immediately apparent. Therefore the only logical justification for shoehorning two such disparate technologies into a single box is simply to save space in your living room. In that context, the machine scores reasonably well - its about the size of a normal VCR player. Theres also something to be said for simplifying the back panel connections - just one cable is all it takes for a basic set-up - although there is a price to pay for this. It doesn have S-Video or RGB outputs, presumably to keep it all simple and reduce the cost, and also because a standard VHS deck is only able to output a composite video signal. That means at a stroke the picture quality of the DVD player is already compromised - not a good start. Connection to a 5.1 decoder might also prove fairly difficult for some users, as the Bush machine doesn have an optical bitstream output, however, it does have coaxial phono digital connections, which is good to see. While we
e on the subject of plugs and sockets, Bush has included a Scart cable in the package and it has front-mounted AV terminals, which makes copying home videos a good deal easier.

PhilipÆs DVD711 is an entry-level single-disc DVD player with some advanced features, such as a dual-laser optical pickup (one is for playback of CD-Rs), black-level adjustment and 5-disc resume. The latter lets you take a break from a movie and then pick up right where you left off. The DVD711 has 10-bit video processing and component video outputs (not progressive scan) for a high-quality connection to compatible TVs. Youll also find the more familiar assortment of S-video and composite video outs. On the audio side, the DVD711 can also handle DVDs with 96-kHz/24-bit audio. This model will pass both Dolby Digital and DTS signals through its two digital audio jacks (one optical, one coaxial). If youve got a two-speaker setup you can take advantage of the simulated surround sound feature. There are also dual stereo analog outputs for connection to stereo or Dolby Pro Logic systems.
